The Jongmyo Autumn Ancestral Rite: Honoring royal spirits through centuries of tradition
[교육연합신문=이채원 학생기자] With autumn fast arriving and quickly fleeting, the various palaces of the Joseon Dynasty are the perfect places to go to witness Korea in its four seasons. With the gray skyline and modern buildings forming a backdrop for vivid shades of red, yellow, and gold, Seoul creates a unique seasonal charm. Jongmyo, with its quiet pathways and serene traditional architecture, is one of the most peaceful places in Seoul to experience this autumn atmosphere. Jongmyo Shrine is located right next to these palaces, and with the cultural opportunities it offers, the heritage site holds significance for many, especially this time of the year. Jongmyo Shrine is the premier state shrine in the country to hold ancestral rites for kings and queens, emperors and empresses of Joseon and the Korean Empire. It was initially built to the east of Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1395, and at that time, there was only the Jeongjeon Shrine. In this single shrine, five kings–the four ancestors of reigning kings, including King Taejo, the founder of Joseon–were enshrined. However, King Sejong found that the deities of kings who deviated from the four ancestors required shrines, and therefore built Yeongnyeongjeon Hall. King Yeonsangun later changed the system of enshrinement, dividing the place by establishing “Sesil” and “Jocheon”. A “Sesil” was a king who had succeeded or had high merit, and a “Jocheon” was for kings with a short line of succession, or who had passed away. The “Sesil” was kept in Jeongjeon Hall, while “Jocheon” was moved to the Yeongnyeongjeon Hall. Source: Official Website of the Jongmyo Daeje (https://jongmyo.net/57) Jongmyo Shrine was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 for its well-preserved original structure and distinctive architectural style. Even more significant, however, are the Jongmyo Jerye Ritual and Jongmyo Jeryeak Music performed at the shrine, both of which are registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. These traditions are uniquely Korean and represent a rich, comprehensive cultural heritage. The Jongmyo Jerye is a royal ancestral ritual held at Jongmyo Shrine, where the spirit tablets of past kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty are enshrined. This year, the Jongmyo Autumn Ancestral Rite took place on November 1, marking the conclusion of the 2025 ceremonies, which occur annually on the first Sunday of May and the first Saturday of November. The ritual itself consists of two parts: the Substitute Rite and the Royal Rite. The ritual itself follows in this order: Chwiwi (positioning), Singwan-rye (Purification Rite), Cheonjo-rye (food offerings), Choheon-rye (first wine offering), Aheon-rye (second wine offering), Jongheon-rye (final wine offering), Eumbok-rye (Sharing of Blessings), Songsin-rye (farewell to the spirits), Mangnyo-rye (fire offering), and finally Mangnyo (completion). In addition, the Jongmyo Daeje includes Jeryeak, royal ancestral ritual music, and Ilmu, court dance. These extensive traditions reflect the significance of the history of these kings in Korea. Jongmyo Shrine features numerous rocky pathways, with signs warning against walking on them, as they are reserved for the spirits that roam the area. These small details are what make Korea such a historically and culturally significant location. In addition to the beautiful autumn foliage and sights, Jongmyo Shrine offers a cultural context of Korea, with traditions that honor the past while engaging the people of the present–a rare, yet beautiful opportunity for anyone visiting or living in Korea.

The 2025 World Heritage Joseon Royal Tombs Festival: Reflecting on Korean leaders
[교육연합신문=이채원 학생기자] The 2025 World Heritage Joseon Royal Tombs Festival, held from October 18 to October 26, has officially come to a close. It was held at the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Korea. It houses 40 tombs of the members of the House of Yi, which ruled Korea (at the time known as Joseon, and later as the Korean Empire) between 1392 and 1910. These tombs are scattered throughout the Korean Peninsula. The royal tombs are the burial sites of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty and the emperors/empresses of the Korean Empire. These are treasured as Korean heritage sites, and so have been preserved in their entirety. Among these tombs, the festival took place across 10 sites: Seolleung and Jengneung, Taereung and Gangneung, Uireung, Dongguerung, Hongneung and Yureung, Gimp Jangneung and Yeongneung, and Yeongneung. Recently, I have had the opportunity to visit King Sejong’s royal tomb, Yeongneung, on the last day of the festival. Yeongneung, located in Gyeonggi-do, holds both Great King Sejong and his consort, Queen Soheon. Queen Soheon and King Sejong are widely renowned as one of the most respected royal couples in Korean history. King Sejong, who reigned from 1418 to 1450 as the fourth monarch of the Joseon Dynasty, is celebrated as the greatest king in Korean history, marking an era of remarkable innovations such as the sundial, rain gauge, and his most significant accomplishment, the creation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet. His creation and proclamation of Hangul in 1446 demonstrates his passion for education, as the newfound language allowed even the most common of Korean citizens to gain literacy they may not have been able to get from Chinese textbooks. Beyond scientific and linguistic accomplishments, King Sejong also strengthened the kingdom through his campaigns against northern outlaws, the subjugation of Tsushima Island, and the advancement of printing technology, which expanded academic opportunities for his people. The center of Yeongneung, King Sejong’s royal tomb has an octagonal stone lantern, surrounded by stone structures of animals–sheep, tigers, horses, scholars, soldiers, and posts. These stone structures have been placed in the belief of protecting the king’s deceased self and his legacy. The animals are positioned outward, as if facing the evil spirits themselves, while the curved wall that surrounds the tomb offers extra protection. The sculptures have their respective significance, with the scholars representing King Sejong’s court and the horses representing his power and influence. The World Heritage Joseon Royal Tombs Festival occurs annually to provide opportunities to see the tombs up close. Events include royal procession to Joseon Tombs, “Royal Tomb Tales”, concerts, strolls, and more. Yeongneung, in particular, is a beautiful location especially in autumn where visitors can enjoy the colorful foliage and the peaceful pathways. As a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of historical remembrance, the Joseon Royal Tombs Festival is a great chance to connect with Korean history and with great historical leaders like the Great King Sejong.

Deoksugung Palace: Where history meets modern experiences
[교육연합신문=이채원 학생기자] Deoksugung Palace, located in the heart of downtown Seoul and across from Seoul City Hall, is known for its significance as a former royal palace. However, what many people don’t know is that currently the historical location offers special programs that are created from a unique blend of Korean and Western cultures. Deoksugung Palace has a very rich history that dates back to the Joseon Dynasty. Initially, the site was the residential home of Grand Prince Wolsan. Later, it served as a temporary palace for King Seonjo during the 1592–1598 Imjin War. In 1611, King Gwanghaegun ascended to the throne and briefly resided in Deoksugung Palace, which was called Gyeongungung Palace at the time. Over the following years, however, the main royal residences were located elsewhere and the palace remained largely unused for much of the 17th and 18th centuries. It was not until the late 19th century that the site regained prominence. Specifically, in 1897, King Gojong proclaimed the establishment of the Korean Empire and designated Gyeongungung, now known as Deoksugung, as the empire’s main palace. This designation marked a significant moment in Korean history, as the palace became the center of imperial administration and a symbol of Korea’s efforts to modernize in the face of internal reform and external pressures. This palace became a symbol of modernization in Korea, featuring major structures such as Junghwajeon Hall and Western-style buildings including Dondeokjeon Hall, Jeonggwanheon, and Seokjojeon Hall. An interesting yet tragic fact is that the palace was renamed Deoksugung in 1907, which means “Palace of Virtuous Longevity.” When Korea was colonized by Japan in 1910, however, Emperor Gojong was forced to abdicate and lived in the palace until his death in 1919. During the Japanese colonization, Deoksugung went through numerous changes. Despite these events, the palace still remains a historic site reflecting Korean history with a mix of architectural styles from Korea and Western countries. One instance of this mixture of cultures is Seokjojeon Hall, which includes numerous examples of a more Westernized architectural style. In the present day, Deoksugung Palace offers numerous special night experiences that include guided historical tours, musical performances, and cafes. One can easily be guided through the palace grounds and learn about the imperial family and Korean history, or enjoy the terrace cafe experience with a musical performance about Emperor Gojong. The cultural program “Seokjojeon at Night” is once again welcoming visitors this fall at Deoksugung Palace. Organized by the Korea Heritage Agency, the spring session ran from April 8 to May 25, and the autumn session continues through September 10 to October 26 this year. The event offers rare evening access to Seokjojeon Hall, normally closed at night. Participants join a palace walk led by a court lady, tour the hall with a docent, and enjoy Gabae, coffee once favored by Emperor Gojong, on the terrace overlooking the palace nightscape. The evening also includes a musical set in the Korean Empire era and photo opportunities with vintage accessories. Though tickets are allocated by lottery and competition is fierce, the chance to experience this rare autumn evening at Seokjojeon makes the effort worthwhile. Overall, this heritage site features numerous references to significant historical events while also including fun events for the public to engage with. The palace grounds are beautiful, especially at night, and so it is highly recommended to go visit this location to simply stroll around or partake in one of the many activities offered.

Visiting Seoul Munmyo and Sungkyunkwan
[교육연합신문=최하영 학생기자] On September 1, 2025, I visited Munmyo and Sungkyunkwan, two important heritage sites located in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Munmyo is the Confucian shrine dedicated to Confucius, and Sungkyunkwan was the highest educational institution during the Joseon Dynasty. These sites are more than historic buildings—they are living testaments to Korea’s Confucian tradition, philosophy, and educational legacy. Preservation of Cultural Heritage The state of preservation was impressive. The tiled roofs, wooden columns, and surrounding old-growth trees radiated a sense of solemnity. Key structures like the Daeseongjeon (Main Hall of Confucius) and Dongmu/Seomu (East and West Shrines for Confucius’s disciples) were well maintained. Access to certain areas was restricted to prevent damage, and footpaths were clearly marked to guide visitors away from sensitive zones—an effective preservation strategy for long-term sustainability. Visitor Attitudes and Etiquette While many visitors showed respect for the sacred atmosphere, some behaviors were disappointing. A few people spoke loudly on their phones or crossed into restricted areas to take pictures. Others ignored signage and walked on the stone pathways reserved for ceremonial processions. These actions reflect a lack of awareness about the cultural and ritual significance of these sites. More signage and pre-visit education could help improve visitor etiquette, especially among younger tourists and international visitors. Interpretive Resources and Tour Guides The interpretation services were helpful. Free pamphlets were available at the entrance, and QR code guides offered digital explanations in Korean, English, and Chinese. On weekends, professional cultural interpreters provided live tours that enriched the experience. Their explanation of ancestral rituals and the Confucian philosophy embedded in the layout of the buildings added depth and historical context. Promotional Materials and Digital Outreach Printed brochures were minimal, and they lacked engaging formats for youth or first-time visitors. The official websites—such as the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation—contained detailed information but were somewhat difficult to navigate, especially on mobile devices. There is a clear need for more engaging digital content, such as story-based videos, virtual tours, or interactive maps tailored to students and foreign audiences. Inconveniences and Visitor Experience The most notable inconvenience during my visit was the lack of shaded resting areas in the summer heat. As most of the structures are outdoors, visitors were exposed to direct sunlight for long periods. Few benches or water refill stations were available along the tour path. Additionally, the limited parking and unclear public transport instructions made the site less accessible than expected. In conclusion, Munmyo and Sungkyunkwan are not merely heritage sites but symbolic spaces where Korea’s traditional values of learning, respect, and harmony with nature are preserved. This visit reminded me that the role of national heritage is not only to reflect the past but also to educate the present and inspire the future. More proactive efforts in education, digital promotion, and visitor experience design could further enhance the value and impact of these historical treasures.

80th Gwangbokjeol: Recollect of the Patriotic Martyrs of Korea
[교육연합신문=이윤서 학생기자] August 15th is a meaningful day to Koreans. It is the Liberation day of Korea, Gwangbokjeol. On Gwangbokjeol, we put the Korean flag, Taegeukgi up to remember and thank those who has let us liberate. Let's travel back to the time. On August 29th, 1910, Japan–Korea Annexation Treaty was concluded. Then, Korea has suffered colonization until August 15th, 1945, when they were finally liberated. During this 35 years, a lot of people worked for the end of colonization. So on every Gwangbokjeol, Koreans put their flag up high to remember and think about their nation again, which came back to them thanks to the patriotic martyrs. A lot of people, even with their names unknown, has stood up for the country to fight their fatherland back. Yu Gwansun, Lee Bongchang, An Junggeun, and more has lead Independence Movement. They are known to a lot of people. But we should also keep in mind the ones who have sacrificed their lives for liberation of Korea, who we don't know names This year's Gwangbokjeol is more meaningful as they celebrate 80th anniversary of it. Please take your Taegeukgi out and put it up high and recall patriotic martyrs for the country.

Gwangbokjeol Marks 80th Anniversary at Seodaemun Prison Hall
[교육연합신문=이채원 학생기자] This year’s Gwangbokjeol marks the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japan’s 35-year colonial rule. Gwangbokjeol, or Korean National Liberation Day, is observed on August 15 each year and was first established in 1948, which marked both the third anniversary of liberation and the official founding of South Korea. It is a day to commemorate the sacrifices and efforts of independence fighters. Two important sites that symbolize this National Holiday include the Seodaemun Prison History Hall and Seodaemun Independence Park. Numerous events were held at both locations, primarily at the Seodaemun Prison History Hall. Historically, this location was first built and opened on October 21, 1908, under Japanese colonial rule with the intent of imprisoning independence movement activists. It underwent numerous name changes, starting as Gyeongseong Prison, then Seodaemun Prison on September 3, 1912, and finally becoming the familiar Seodaemun Independence Park on August 15, 1992. Currently, only seven buildings have been preserved for their historical significance. Numerous independence movement fighters were imprisoned at this site. Among the thousands detained during this tragic period were notable figures such as Yu Gwan-sun, Ahn Chang-ho, Kim Gu, Yun Bong-gil, Han Yong-un, Heo Wi, Cho Bong-am, Cho Yong-soo, and Kim Dae-jung. They were imprisoned for acts of resistance, advocacy of pro-democracy ideals, and participation in political movements. Seodaemun Independence Festival 2025 featured a wide range of events. Some of the key attractions encompassed the Liberation Eve concert, the official Liberation Day ceremony, interactive booths, stamp rallies, and guided prison museum tours. Gwangbokjeol is a very emotional and historical day on which everyone in Korea, whether a foreigner or a citizen, takes time to remember the sacrifices that independence movement fighters made for the nation. It is highly recommended to take some time on this National Holiday to visit one or both of these locations and to recognize the tremendous impact of these prisoners.

Japanese style houses in Korea
[교육연합신문=안우현 학생기자] There are some houses that look out of place in Korea with styles that deviate from the typical Korean building. These houses are former Japanese houses from the colonial era. They are mostly located in cities like Incheon and Seoul, where many Japanese families moved to make a living. Built for Japanese during the Japanese occupation period of Korea from 1910 to 1945, they follow the general Japanese style architecture with straight sloped roof and 2 story structure. After the occupation ended, the government confiscated these Japanese houses and redistributed them to the Korean people. As time passed, these houses were neglected or damaged due to the lack of awareness about their heritage. Furthermore, as Korea sought to rapidly modernize, many Koerans viewed these houses as relics of colonialism and demolished most, leaving only a few houses intact. However, these houses hold architectural significance as they blended western, Japanese, and Korean influences. They utilized western materials like glass and brick while utilizing a Korean internal heating system called the Ondol, which heats the floor. Acknowledging their significance, the government has started designating them as cultural heritages starting in the 2000s. Although these houses represent a painful era of Korean history, they still function as heritages that have withstood a 100 years and represent Korea’s modern history. Many of these Japanese style houses have been transformed into cafes, serving as cultural spaces where tourists can get a glimpse into the daily lives of people living in Korean in the 1920s.

Changdeokgung Palace
[교육연합신문=최하영 학생기자] In the heart of Seoul’s busy streets, Changdeokgung Palace offers a quiet summer refuge. Located in Jongno-gu, the palace is embraced by dense greenery, curved tiled rooftops, and serene lotus ponds—quietly telling stories of Joseon’s history and architectural beauty. Changdeokgung was built in 1405 by King Taejong, the third monarch of the Joseon Dynasty. Among the five grand palaces of Seoul, it was the most frequently used royal residence throughout the dynasty’s 500-year history. While Gyeongbokgung served as the political center, Changdeokgung functioned as a more personal and natural space for the kings. What makes Changdeokgung unique is its deep harmony with the landscape. The palace buildings follow the natural contours of the hills at the foot of Mt. Bugak, blending into the environment rather than dominating it. This reflects not only an aesthetic sensibility but also the practical and philosophical mindset of late Joseon scholars who emphasized harmony between humans and nature. One of the highlights of the palace is its rear garden, known as Huwon or the “Secret Garden.” In summer, pink lotus blossoms bloom across its ponds, and sunlight filters through towering trees along the forest paths. The garden was not just a royal retreat, but a space for study, reflection, and discussion—used by kings and scholars alike. To celebrate summer and provide visitors with rest, a special program is currently underway. From July 30 to the end of August, the palace’s Yakbang (royal pharmacy) is open as a rest area. Visitors can enjoy a cool cup of omija tea—a traditional Korean five-flavor tea—while relaxing in the shade of historical architecture. This thoughtful gesture allows guests to refresh both body and mind in the very place where royal physicians once worked to heal the king. Changdeokgung was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. It is globally recognized not only for its preservation but also for the values and philosophies embedded in its structure. Today, the palace serves as a living classroom, where students and citizens alike can encounter Korea’s past in a tangible and meaningful way. Walking along the shaded paths of Huwon, one can imagine the kings of Joseon strolling the same route, momentarily setting aside affairs of state to appreciate the breeze and the scent of pine. If you are looking for a place where history and nature meet in the heat of summer, Changdeokgung Palace may be the perfect destination.

Amsadong Prehistoric Site
[교육연합신문=최하영 학생기자] Located in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, the Amsadong Prehistoric Site came to light during the great flood of 1925, known as the Eulchuk Year Flood. As part of the floodplain of the Han River, the area had been repeatedly affected by seasonal flooding. The powerful current eventually eroded the soil and exposed evidence of Neolithic life beneath. Full-scale archaeological investigation began in the 1960s. In 1966, Korea University conducted the first survey. Two years later, during the construction of a baseball training field for Jangchung High School, residential remains were uncovered. This led to a joint excavation by several universities. In 1971, the National Museum of Korea launched a major excavation project to identify the characteristics of Neolithic culture in Korea. Excavations carried out through 1975 revealed pit dwellings, comb-pattern pottery, net sinkers, grinding stones, and artifacts from the Baekje period. These findings offered insight into prehistoric culture along the Han River, extending beyond simple artifact collection. In the 1980s, the site was also investigated for educational purposes. From 1983 to 1984, the Seoul National University Museum re-excavated areas previously studied by the National Museum. In 1998, additional dwellings were uncovered during the expansion of the site’s education center. In the 2000s, further investigations were conducted to develop an experiential village for visitors. Trial and full-scale excavations were carried out in the northern section by Seoul National University(2005) and Kyung Hee University(2008). In 2015, a test excavation for park improvement confirmed layers from both the Neolithic and Three Kingdoms periods. From 2016 to 2018, further excavations revealed round pit houses with central hearths from the Neolithic era, as well as Baekje-era dwellings layered on top. Notably, ornaments made of jade and obsidian were discovered for the first time at the site. To date, a wide variety of artifacts such as comb-pattern pottery, grinding tools, axes, net sinkers, and charred acorns have been unearthed. These findings serve not only as archaeological evidence but also as educational resources that vividly illustrate the lifestyle, environment, and technology of Korea’s Neolithic people. Situated in the heart of Seoul, the Amsadong site continues to serve as a valuable space for reflecting on the origins of human life. Far from being a relic of the past, it remains a place where ancient history meets the present. Currently, special exhibitions are being held to mark the 100th anniversary of the site’s discovery, alongside interactive programs for children such as the Prehistoric Experience Class. Participation is highly recommended.
