Buddha’s birthday(석가탄신일) marks one of the most important national holidays in South Korea. It is a time to commemorate and honor the Buddha, reflect on his teachings, and reaffirm one’s faith. This year, it is May 5, 2025.
The day of Buddha’s birthday varies according to the Lunar Calendar, and is typically celebrated in May. It follows the eighth day of the fourth month on the Lunar calendar cycle, but depends on the country celebrating it.
According to a 2024 report by the Religious Awareness Survey, South Korea has a diverse religious landscape: 20% of Koreans identify as Protestant, 11% as Catholic, 17% as Buddhist, and 51% report having no religious affiliation. Buddhism first arrived in Korea in the fourth century, dispersing very quickly. However, it was heavily suppressed during the Joseon dynasty, as Confucianism was favored over Buddhism.
Now, there are numerous Buddhist temples in South Korea where one is able to learn more about the religion and engage with the customs, such as the Jogyesa Temple. In these temples, one is able to buy incense which they can burn while meditating. One is able to borrow mats and books to further engage with the Buddha. It is also possible to pay monks to pray for you.
Though not an extremely large population, foreigners, believers, and non-believers alike come forward to celebrate this holiday and to participate in the festivities. The annual lantern parade is one of the most prominent events during this time. Hundreds to thousands of people gather around to light colorful lanterns, creating a beautiful scene.
It is also very common to visit temples during this period of time. These traditional temples are often lined up with thousands of colorful lanterns above with messages tied onto them. Anyone is free to go inside the temples themselves and show deference towards the Buddha. Many can be seen on the floor meditating or strengthening their belief.
Buddha’s birthday is a significant day marking the Lunar calendar for South Korea. It is highly recommended to go visit one of these festivities to fully embrace the beauty of this culture of Korea.
