On March 1, 2025, South Korea marked the 106th anniversary of Independence Movement Day, a national holiday commemorating the country's historic struggle for freedom. Also known as the March 1st Movement (Samiljeol), this day honors the courageous efforts of Korean patriots who resisted Japanese colonial rule in 1919. It remains a deeply significant occasion, symbolizing Korea's unwavering pursuit of independence.

The movement notably took place at Tapgol Park, originally known as Tapdong Park. According to the park information board, on March 1, 1919, approximately 4,000 to 5,000 students gathered in the park, shouting "Long live Korean independence" when the clock struck noon, and publicly reading the Korean Declaration of Independence at the central pavilion. 33 key figures played crucial roles in the early stages of this movement, including Son Byung-hi, Han Yong-un.

South Korea commemorates this day with various ceremonies, reenactments, and memorial services across the country. Because the March 1st Movement is recognized as one of Korea’s most significant historical events, citizens proudly waved the national flag, the Taegeukgi, in tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country's independence.

This year, a notable memorial ceremony was held at Tapgol Park, where the movement first began, as well as at Bosingak, a nearby historic bell pavilion. Choir and musical performances were held at Bosingak to commemorate the March 1st Movement, accompanied by a ceremonial bell ringing, a reading of the Korean Declaration of Independence, and citizens chanting "Manse" while singing the March 1st Song together. Additionally, many people honored the day by wearing traditional Korean attire, such as hanbok, and playing traditional instruments like the piri (a cylindrical double-reed bamboo oboe), kkwaenggwari (a small flat gong), and janggu (an hourglass-shaped drum) at Tapgol Park.

Tapgol Park remains a focal point for these observances, offering visitors an opportunity to engage with Korean history and participate in cultural events held in remembrance of this important day.
