The past few months, K-Pop Demon Hunters has been the most talked-about animated film. From winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film to the MAMA Awards for Music Visionary of the Year to the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, K-Pop Demon Hunters has caught the eyes of the world stage.
One of the famous scenes was actually atop a Korean heritage site: the Seoul City Wall.
The Seoul City Wall, also known as Hanyangdoseong, wraps around the heart of Seoul, outlining its surrounding mountains. Built during the Joseon Dynasty, the wall served as a protective barrier for the capital, stretching over 18 kilometers split into 6 trails. Today, much of it remains preserved, offering both historical insight and scenic walking paths for visitors.
One of the most accessible sections of the wall can be found at Naksan Park. Located along a hillside, Naksan Park provides a unique blend of history and modern city life. As visitors walk alongside the stone walls, they are met with breathtaking views of Seoul’s skyline. The park is especially popular during the sunset.
Following the wall leads to another iconic landmark: Dongdaemun. Officially known as Heunginjimun Gate, Dongdaemun is one of the Eight Gates of the old city wall. Its striking traditional Korean architecture has been carefully preserved in the middle of Korea’s rapid modernization.
Today, Dongdaemun is not just a historical site, but also a vibrant hub of activity. Surrounding the gate is one of Seoul’s busiest shopping districts. This contrast between the ancient gate and the lively urban environment truly highlights Seoul’s unique ability to preserve its past while heading towards the future.
As seen in K-Pop Demon Hunters, the Seoul City Wall and its surrounding landmarks are more than just historical remnants. Whether walking along the paths of Naksan Park or standing breathless before the gates of Dongdaemun, visitors can experience a side of Seoul where history and modern culture coexist harmoniously.
