Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year, is one of the most important traditions in Korea, and fortunately, there are opportunities everywhere for people to go celebrate their history and commemorate the past.

The Namsangol Hanok Village opened up the 2025 Korean New Year’s Day Festival from January 28 to 30, welcoming both citizens and avid learners of Korea eager to experience traditional culture. Located at the northern foot of Namsan in Seoul and also known as Cheonghak-dong, the village features five restored hanok (traditional Korean houses) along with various cultural exhibits. The festival provides a unique chance to immerse oneself in Korea’s rich heritage, making it a must-visit destination for those looking to partake in Seollal festivities.

The event offers a range of New Year performances and activities, including indoor and outdoor traditional experiences. Visitors can take part in kite making, bow making, calligraphy, traditional snack making, amulet crafting, and various Korean folk games.

Having recently visited and experienced the event firsthand, I was able to see the excitement and engagement that was evoked from the visitors of all backgrounds—locals and tourists alike—as they came together to learn more about Korean culture. Even without participating in every activity, the festive atmosphere was palpable.

For those considering a visit the village has numerous small games free for anyone to play without fee, such as New Year’s Fortune by Yut and Ddakji, which are perfect for families and tourists as well. This event is a fun yet educational combination of modern life and historical culture, especially during such a traditional time like Seollal.
