[국가유산지킴이기자단] The Secret Backyard Histories of Korea
Winter strolls in Yanghawanaru Ferry Dock
[교육연합신문=이채원 학생기자]

With the cool and colorful autumn days coming to an end, winter arises in South Korea. The trees lose their color to a bright new white, the snow piling on top of cars wherever you go.
Some famous historical sites in which one can visit during the autumn and enjoy nature are the Yanghawanaru Ferry Dock. These places hold a lot of historical significance and are the perfect areas to have short strolls to bask in the beauty of autumn in Korea.
One place that I visited that is close to my home is the Jeoldusan Martyrs’ Shrine. In the early Joseon period, it is said that this place was called Jamdubong because the mountain top’s shape resembled the head of a silkworm. However, during the Byeongin persecution (1866 - 1873), the mountain became known as Jeoldusan; “Jeoldu” for decapitate and “San” as mountain. This is due to the hundreds of executions and beheadings that took place of Catholics during this time period. These Catholics were persecuted for their beliefs and their faith.
Now, this church is one of the most important historical sites for the Catholic Church in Korea, as it serves as a reminder of all the sacrifices believers made.
While this site has a dark history behind it, it was very interesting and intriguing exploring the past for myself in this area. I also encourage you to try to find places like this near your home to connect with Korea’s history better and get to be a part of it.
